Nigerian Senator Godiya Akwashiki Dead at 52

Godiya Akwashiki , Nigerian Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, has died at the age of 52. A family source confirmed to journalists that the lawmaker passed away on Wednesday at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment for a protracted illness. The family, in a statement, described his passing as a "great loss" to Nasarawa State and the country at large. Prior to being flown abroad, Akwashiki had reportedly been battling health challenges for several months. Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Akwashiki was a seasoned legislator. His political journey began in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he served from 2011 to 2019. During his tenure, he rose to become the Majority Leader and later the Deputy Speaker before his election to the National Assembly. Share this story

Peter Obi Defects to ADC from LP

Peter Obi , the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC). Obi announced his decision in Enugu on Wednesday, December 31. The former Anambra State governor said the move, ahead of the 2027 general election, is aimed at transforming and rescuing Nigeria. “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” he declared. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke Resigns from PDP

With less than 24 hours to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has formally resigned his membership of the party. Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, had announced on Monday that the primary scheduled for Tuesday would no longer hold due to the deepening factional crisis within the party. He added that Governor Adeleke had withdrawn from seeking the party’s nomination as a result of the internal disagreements. However, a separate letter from the PDP National Secretariat insisted that the primary would proceed as planned on Tuesday at the Atlantic Multipurpose Hall in Osogbo. Amid the conflicting positions, a letter dated November 4, 2025, and circulated on Monday evening, confirmed Governor Adeleke’s resignation from the PDP. Guinea-Bissau’s military has taken control of the country and arrested embattled President Umaro Sissoco Embaló following days of political tension. The military's high command announced on Wednesday that it had assumed full authority, deposed President Embaló, and halted the ongoing vote count from Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections. Key government and political figures including the chief of the armed forces, the interior minister, and an opposition leaders were detained as soldiers moved swiftly to consolidate control. Incumbent governor of Anambra state, Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) h as been re-elected as Governor of Anambra State . The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that Soludo won 422,664 of the 584,054 votes cast across the state on Saturday, November 8. His closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the APC, trailed with 99,445 votes. The ADC and PDP candidates polled 8,208 and 1,401 votes respectively. Immigration Officers Seize Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Passport on 'Alleged' Orders of Senate President Akpabio

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) on Monday alleged that Nigerian Immigration officials seized her passport at the airport, temporarily preventing her from travelling abroad. __________________ ___________________ In a live video shared on social media, the lawmaker claimed her travel document was withheld on the orders of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. “Godswill Akpabio has instructed the Controller-General of Customs to withhold my passport. This is wrong,” she said.
