Adams Oshiomhole , senator representing Edo North, has urged the National Assembly to strengthen regulatory oversight of financial institutions operating outside the conventional banking system. Speaking during Thursday’s plenary, Oshiomhole contributed to the debate on a bill seeking to amend the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act. He reportedly fled the country shortly after the incident and was declared wanted by Nigerian authorities. The formal directive from the Uganda Communications Commission cited the need to curb misinformation, electoral fraud, and potential incitement to violence as justifications for the shutdown.  While government officials privately confirmed the order to AFP, the administration has avoided making a public announcement, reportedly to distance itself from the controversial decision. World's richest man Elon Musk in a new tweet quoted that the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) couldn't process his taxes because of the numbers involved and had to update their software before it could be processed I paid so much in taxes one year that it broke the IRS computer (actually). Too many digits. Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara Begin in Rivers Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh . During Thursday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule and broadcast live on Channels Television, the House Majority Leader, Major Jack, read out a notice of allegations and gross misconduct against the governor. The notice, signed by 26 lawmakers, cited breaches of the Nigerian Constitution. Speaker Amaewhule stated that the notice would be formally served on Governor Fubara within seven days. Deputy Majority Leader Linda Stewart also presented a separate notice of allegations against Deputy Governor Oduh. Both notices were issued pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution. Among the accusations against Fubara were the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds due to the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on legislative financial auto...

Eminent Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has alleged medical negligence in the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.  Adichie’s media team confirmed to ARISE News on Saturday that the author penned a detailed statement of the incident, which was originally shared privately with family and close friends before becoming public. In the statement, Adichie said her son was taken to Euracare Hospital for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line. He was sedated for the procedure but allegedly not properly monitored after being administered propofol, resulting in severe complications, including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest. She stated that her son “would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” where he was taken for medical procedures. A high court has remanded 52 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU) , following a protest against local insecurity that turned violent in Ekpoma, Edo State. The demonstration was initially organized by residents to decry a recent surge in killings and kidnappings. However, the situation escalated as mobs looted commercial shops and vandalized the ancestral palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma. _______________________ _______________________ While police moved in to restore order, several students claimed they were caught in a dragnet. The account, dormant since Elon Musk’s $44 billion takeover, now displays a "Rule Violation" notice, though the company has not specified which policy was broken. The move marks a symbolic end for the "Blue Bird" era. Since the 2023 rebrand, Musk has steadily erased legacy features to make room for his "everything app" vision. Court grants former AGF Malami, Wife & Son 1.5 Billion Naira Bail

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted bail to the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abdulaziz Malami , his wife, and his son. Each defendant was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦500 million, accompanied by stringent conditions intended to ensure their appearance for trial. The court's decision follows Malami’s period in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he has been held since December 8. His detention followed a reported failure to satisfy administrative bail terms previously established by the commission. In his ruling, Justice Nwite mandated that each defendant must provide two sureties in like sum. These sureties are required to be owners of landed property within the high-brow Abuja neighborhoods of Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa. Kenneth Ofori-Atta , the former Finance Minister of Ghana, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to a statement released by his legal team on Wednesday. The 66-year-old former official, who served under President Nana Akufo-Addo from 2017 to early 2024, is currently being held at a detention facility in Virginia. The detention appears to center on Ofori-Atta’s immigration status. His lawyers clarified that while he has a pending petition to regularize or extend his stay in the United States, federal authorities moved to detain him earlier this week. Ofori-Atta has resided in the U.S. for over a year, a period his legal team says was necessary for him to undergo medical treatment, including surgery for prostate cancer.
