Nigerian Senator Godiya Akwashiki Dead at 52

Godiya Akwashiki , Nigerian Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, has died at the age of 52. A family source confirmed to journalists that the lawmaker passed away on Wednesday at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment for a protracted illness. The family, in a statement, described his passing as a "great loss" to Nasarawa State and the country at large. Prior to being flown abroad, Akwashiki had reportedly been battling health challenges for several months. Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Akwashiki was a seasoned legislator. His political journey began in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he served from 2011 to 2019. During his tenure, he rose to become the Majority Leader and later the Deputy Speaker before his election to the National Assembly. Share this story

Anthony Joshua's driver to be prosecuted for crash that killed Joshua's 2 friends

The driver of the vehicle conveying former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua during the fatal crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been discharged from hospital and may be charged with reckless driving. “Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital, and he is currently giving his statement,” the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said. _______________________ RELATED : Anthony Joshua Injured in Ogun Road Accident, Two Dead _______________________ An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the driver of the truck involved in the accident fled the scene immediately and has been declared wanted by authorities. Peter Obi , the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC). Obi announced his decision in Enugu on Wednesday, December 31. The former Anambra State governor said the move, ahead of the 2027 general election, is aimed at transforming and rescuing Nigeria. “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” he declared. The Lagos State Government with the approval of the state Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has cancelled the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, the annual end-of-year celebration that traditionally ushers residents into the New Year with music, fireworks and large public gatherings. The cancellation was confirmed on Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gboyega Akosile. According to the statement, the decision was taken with the governor’s approval, barely a day before the event was scheduled to hold on December 31. Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to forgo planned countdown gatherings and instead use the period for personal reflection and prayer. Share this story

World   renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a road accident earlier today in Makun, Ogun State. Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred around 11 a.m. on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane. Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV, registration number KRD 850 HN, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck. USA Announces Visa Suspension for Nigerians, Effective January 1, 2026

The United States has announced a partial suspension of the issuance of certain visas to Nigerian nationals, effective from January 1, 2026, following a new presidential proclamation on border and national security. In a statement issued on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria said the restriction will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 1, 2026, in line with Presidential Proclamation 10998, titled “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States.” Nigeria is among 19 countries affected by the measure. Others listed include Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar & Released Airforce Crew _____ Nigeria has secured the release of 11 Nigerian Air Force pilots and crew members, along with their military aircraft, following high-level diplomatic talks with authorities in Burkina Faso. A Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, met with Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, in Ouagadougou on Wednesday, conveying a message of solidarity from President Bola Tinubu. In a statement, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the pilots and crew were released on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The personnel and their aircraft had been detained by Burkina Faso’s military authoritie s after the jet made what Nigeria described as an emergency landing due to technical issues while en route to Portugal.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo _____ The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25 , and Friday, December 26, 2025 , as public holidays to mark Christmas Day and Boxing Day .  It also announced Thursday, January 1, 2026 , as a public holiday for the New Year celebrations.
