Nnamdi Kanu Moved to Sokoto Prison after Life Sentence

The judge ruled that the prosecution proved its case and said Kanu offered “no credible defence”. The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after a decade-long trial. ___________________ RELATED : Nigerian FG seeks death penalty for Nnamdi Kanu following Conviction on Terrorism Charge ¡ ___________________ Justice James Omotosho delivered the ruling on Thursday, four years after Kanu was arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria. He was convicted on all seven terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government, despite pleading not guilty. ______________________ ________________________ The judgment was delivered in Kanu’s absence after he disrupted proceedings, leading the judge to order security operatives to remove him from the courtroom. Justice Omotosho held that Kanu’s Radio Biafra broadcasts and sit-at-home orders in the South-East amounted to acts of terrorism, infringed on citizens’ rights, and promoted violence against security personnel. The Federal Government on Thursday asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to impose the death penalty on Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following his conviction. Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court ruled that Kanu was guilty on one count of the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. The court held that it was convinced Kanu made a series of broadcasts that incited violence and killings in pursuit of his separatist campaign for a Biafran state. Justice Omotosho said his verdict was based on what he described as “uncontroverted evidence” presented by the prosecution. Share this story
