Nigerian FG declares Public Holidays on December 25th, 26th & January 1st

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to mark Christmas Day and Boxing Day. 

It also announced Thursday, January 1, 2026, as a public holiday for the New Year celebrations.

The announcement was conveyed in a statement on Monday by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajayi, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Dr Tunji-Ojo extended Christmas and New Year greetings to Christians in Nigeria and across the world, as well as to all Nigerians. He noted that the festive season provides an opportunity to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility and sacrifice exemplified by the birth of Jesus Christ.

He urged Nigerians, irrespective of religious or ethnic background, to use the period to pray for peace, security and national progress, while supporting the Federal Government’s efforts toward unity and development.

The minister also called on citizens to remain law-abiding and vigilant during the celebrations, and to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and safe holiday period. He wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Eminent Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has alleged medical negligence in the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.  Adichie’s media team confirmed to ARISE News on Saturday that the author penned a detailed statement of the incident, which was originally shared privately with family and close friends before becoming public. In the statement, Adichie said her son was taken to Euracare Hospital for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line. He was sedated for the procedure but allegedly not properly monitored after being administered propofol, resulting in severe complications, including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted bail to the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abdulaziz Malami , his wife, and his son. Each defendant was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦500 million, accompanied by stringent conditions intended to ensure their appearance for trial. The court's decision follows Malami’s period in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he has been held since December 8. His detention followed a reported failure to satisfy administrative bail terms previously established by the commission. In his ruling, Justice Nwite mandated that each defendant must provide two sureties in like sum. Arsenal and England ace midfielder Declan Rice has been hit with a six-month driving ban after being caught speeding twice on the same road in just one week. The £105million midfielder was first caught doing 37mph in a 30mph zone on January 3 last year. Barely five days later, the 26-year-old was caught again on the same stretch of the A217, hit for doing 49mph in a 40mph limit. The England international, who did not attend the hearing at Crawley Magistrates Court Tuesday, 01/06/25, he was hit with a £2,185 bill in fines and costs.  The disqualification comes after the new offences took his license to 15 points, way over the total limit. The account, dormant since Elon Musk’s $44 billion takeover, now displays a "Rule Violation" notice, though the company has not specified which policy was broken. The move marks a symbolic end for the "Blue Bird" era. Since the 2023 rebrand, Musk has steadily erased legacy features to make room for his "everything app" vision.
