BREAKING: Supreme Court Affirms Death Sentence for Maryam Sanda, Nullifies President Tinubu’s Pardon

The Supreme Court has overturned the presidential pardon granted to Abuja housewife, Maryam Sanda, reinstating the death sentence imposed on her for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier commuted Sanda’s sentence to 12 years’ imprisonment on compassionate grounds. However, in a split decision of four to one delivered on Friday, the apex court affirmed the death-by-hanging verdict earlier upheld by the Court of Appeal.

The court dismissed Sanda’s appeal in its entirety, ruling that it lacked merit. Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Moore Adumein held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the appellate court was right to affirm the trial court’s decision.

Justice Adumein further stated that it was improper for the Executive to exercise its power of pardon in a culpable homicide case while an appeal was still pending.

World   renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a road accident earlier today in Makun, Ogun State. Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred around 11 a.m. on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane. Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV, registration number KRD 850 HN, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck. USA Announces Visa Suspension for Nigerians, Effective January 1, 2026

The United States has announced a partial suspension of the issuance of certain visas to Nigerian nationals, effective from January 1, 2026, following a new presidential proclamation on border and national security. In a statement issued on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria said the restriction will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 1, 2026, in line with Presidential Proclamation 10998, titled “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States.” Nigeria is among 19 countries affected by the measure. Others listed include Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Thieves Drill into German Bank Vault, Steal €30m in Cash & Gold in Massive Christmas Heist

German police have launched an intensive manhunt after one of the largest bank heists in Germany’s recent history, in which thieves drilled into the underground vault of a Sparkasse savings bank in Gelsenkirchen and stole cash, gold and jewellery estimated at about €30 million . The carefully planned robbery occurred over the Christmas holiday in the Buer district of Gelsenkirchen, western Germany. Investigators believe the suspects took advantage of the prolonged holiday closure to access the vault unnoticed. Police said the gang drilled through a thick concrete wall to enter the basement vault, where they systematically forced open thousands of customer safe deposit boxes and removed valuables worth tens of millions of euros. The Lagos State Government with the approval of the state Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has cancelled the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, the annual end-of-year celebration that traditionally ushers residents into the New Year with music, fireworks and large public gatherings. The cancellation was confirmed on Tuesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Gboyega Akosile. According to the statement, the decision was taken with the governor’s approval, barely a day before the event was scheduled to hold on December 31. Burkina Faso ’s military government has confirmed the detention of 11 Nigerian military personnel and the seizure of a Nigerian Air Force cargo aircraft that entered the country’s airspace without authorisation before making an emergency landing. In a statement issued late Monday, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) said the C-130 aircraft was compelled to land on December 8, 2025, in Bobo-Dioulasso following an in-flight emergency. The bloc said the aircraft, which belonged to the Nigerian Air Force, had flown over Burkinabe territory without the required clearance.
