100 Niger Schoolchildren Released, after Weeks in Captivity

The Niger State Government on Monday received 100 schoolchildren who were freed weeks after being abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area.

The children, transported in several buses under heavy security, arrived at the Government House in Minna at about 5:20 p.m., where they were formally received by Governor Mohammed Bago, top government officials and their families.

Armed men had attacked the remote community on November 21, breaking into the school around 2 a.m. and kidnapping 315 people,303 students and 12 teachers.

50 pupils escaped within the first 24 hours and reunited with their families, leaving 165 victims in captivity before the latest release.
