Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan Currently Trapped in Guinea-Bissau after Coup

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly stranded in Guinea-Bissau after a group of military officers announced a takeover of the government.

Jonathan, who was in the country as part of an international election observation mission, is among hundreds of foreign observers unable to depart following Sunday’s general elections. The results were expected to be officially declared before the coup announcement halted the process.

According to Daily Trust, many observers who rushed to the airport after news of the takeover broke were unable to leave, as the situation quickly deteriorated.

The coup leaders, identifying themselves as the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” declared “total control” of the country on Wednesday.

The move came a day after the two leading candidates, incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and opposition contender Fernando Dias each declared victory despite the electoral commission not yet releasing official results.

The military junta has since suspended the electoral process “until further notice,” closed all land, air, and sea borders, and imposed an overnight curfew.
