Adams Oshiomhole, senator representing Edo North, has urged the National Assembly to strengthen regulatory oversight of financial institutions operating outside the conventional banking system.

Speaking during Thursday’s plenary, Oshiomhole contributed to the debate on a bill seeking to amend the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act. The proposed amendment aims to introduce the designation, registration, and enhanced supervision of systemically important financial institutions.

The senator said his own experience with cyber fraud highlights how emerging digital platforms are increasingly being exploited for illicit financial activities. He said:

“When they hacked into my account, I found that all the institutions used were OPAY and Moneypoint; none of the registered banks were used,” he said.

“And when I asked, I’m told that’s it. They don’t have a branch in Abuja. They don’t employ labour. They bear no social responsibility.”

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh . Each defendant was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦500 million, accompanied by stringent conditions intended to ensure their appearance for trial. The court's decision follows Malami’s period in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he has been held since December 8. The United States has announced a partial suspension of the issuance of certain visas to Nigerian nationals, effective from January 1, 2026, following a new presidential proclamation on border and national security. In a statement issued on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria said the restriction will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 1, 2026, in line with Presidential Proclamation 10998, titled “Restricting and Limiting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States.” Nigeria is among 19 countries affected by the measure. Vince Zampella , the influential co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise and founder of Respawn Entertainment, was killed Sunday 12/21/25 in a high-speed, single-car accident in the San Gabriel Mountains.
