The fatal incident involved a Dangote truck loaded with cement, which is alleged to have lost control and rammed into a row of shops along the Owo - Akungba- Ikare Akoko expressway.
The devastating crash has plunged residents and students of the nearby Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) into deep mourning.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horror, suggesting the truck driver lost control, swerved off the road, and ploughed into the roadside structures. One witness confirmed that the lifeless body of a yet-to-be-identified pregnant woman was later recovered from under the vehicle.
Conflicting Casualty Figures
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the incident, stating the accident involved a cement-laden Dangote truck that ran into a barricade in front of the university before losing control.
However, the official death toll provided by the FRSC currently stands at eight fatalities, comprising "five males, two females and one male child." Initial reports from eyewitnesses, which are often fluid in the immediate aftermath of such events, suggested up to ten casualties.
The accident has once again sparked concerns over the safety measures and traffic control along the busy expressway.
