The historic move saw Sarkozy driven to La Santé Prison in southern Paris on Tuesday morning. Before leaving his house, he briefly waved to supporters. His convoy, a car surrounded by dozens of police motorbikes and vehicles made its way through the city to the complex.
Sarkozy was sentenced last month for his involvement in a scheme to illegally finance his 2007 presidential campaign with funds from Libya in exchange for diplomatic favors.
Despite having appealed his conviction, the former president, who left office in 2012, is expected to occupy a cell at La Santé while his appeal is processed.
Sarkozy is likely to be placed in either solitary confinement or the prison's so-called "VIP wing."
This wing is typically reserved for inmates deemed unsuitable for the general prison population, often for safety concerns. This group can include politicians, former police officers, or individuals tied to extremist organizations.
