BoxOffice Monday: Netflix Green Lights Squid Game for 2nd Season

Netflix announced Sunday that the wildly popular South Korean show is green lit for a second season.



"And now, Gi-hun returns," director, writer and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk said in a letter to fans. "The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming.




"Squid Game" is a fictional drama from South Korea in which contestants who are desperately in need of money play deadly children's games to win cash prizes.

Seong Gi-hun, the main protagonist of "Squid Game," is a divorced gambler who entered the contest for the big money. Hwang also teased new characters and developments in the second season.



"The man in the suit with ddakji might be back," he wrote, referring to the mysterious salesman who recruits desperate players to the game show.

The letter also said viewers will be introduced to Cheol-su, the "boyfriend" of the show's infamous animatronic doll, Young-hee.



Squid Game" was the "biggest-ever series at launch" for the company. It is the platform's first-ever Korean series to reach No. 1 in the United States, attracting 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the 28 days following its release.



"It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year," Hwang said in the letter. "But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular series ever."

Chicago drill rapper Devonsha Collier, known as THF Bayzoo and an associate of Lil Durk, was fatally shot this past weekend in Little Village, Chicago, authorities said. Collier, 35, was struck around 3 p.m. Saturday on the 3100 block of South St. Louis Avenue. Two other men, ages 39 and 42, were also injured. Collier was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead early Sunday. Police have ruled the case a homicide. No suspects were in custody as of Monday. Video allegedly showing the attack surfaced on social media shortly after the shooting. Collier was previously acquitted in a 2009 murder case after being arrested in 2014 at rapper Lil Durk’s Orland Park home. He was found not guilty in 2017. Share this story

" The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained popular Lagos socialite and nightclub proprietor, Mike Eze Nwalie Nwogu, known as Pretty Mike, following a raid on his Victoria Island establishment where a suspected drug-themed party was taking place. United States Revokes Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka's Visa

Nigerian Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka on Tuesday disclosed that the United States has revoked his visa, effectively barring him from entering the country for the time being.
